China has reported a noticeable increase in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases since mid-December 2024, raising public concerns about a potential recurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to local media.
Medical experts, however, assure the public that HMPV is a long-recognized respiratory illness, not a new pathogen.
Reports from domestic media indicate that individuals are presenting with “flu-like” symptoms, including dizziness, prompting speculation about an unfamiliar virus.
Although the majority of cases remain mild, HMPV poses risks to certain groups, including children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
Since no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine exists for HMPV, doctors recommend supportive care. Rest, light diets, and dressing appropriately for the weather are key steps to recovery.
Preventive measures, including mask-wearing, frequent handwashing, proper ventilation, and avoiding crowded spaces, also help reduce transmission.
