The year 2025 ushers in a breakthrough for satellite meteorology in Morocco. The Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) now employs data from the state-of-the-art observation and analysis Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) system, which replaces the older Meteosat Second Generation (MSG).
The new system signifies a major leap in weather forecasts. It offers continuous 24/7 monitoring with higher resolution, delivering images every 10 minutes at a 1 km resolution, compared to MSG’s 15 minutes and 3 km.
The MTG system also features an enhanced spectral range, providing 16 observation channels instead of 12. Additionally, it introduces the groundbreaking capability of real-time lightning detection, a significant advancement in meteorological tracking.
EUMETSAT, the European organization specializing in satellite meteorology, said on December 4 that the MTG system is fully operational via the Eumetcast Europe (Ku-Band) service. This milestone ensures access to highly precise satellite data, enabling more accurate weather forecasting.
