The volume of coastal and traditional fishing landings at Tan-Tan Port dropped sharply by 46% in the period January through November 2024, down by nearly half from the same period in 2023, according to Morocco’s National Fisheries Office (ONP). Only 54,187 tons were landed in this period in 2024 as compared to 100,683 tons in 2023.
The ONP’s latest report on coastal and traditional fishing in Morocco highlighted that the market value of these products, 737.79 million MAD, also declined by 10% compared to the 822.769 million MAD by November 2023.
The report further noted a 54% drop in small, pelagic fish landings at the port, amounting to 38,650 tons valued at 157.765 million MAD, as compared to 84,443 tons (276.950 million MAD) last year.
Whitefish landings also fell by 14%, at only 9,948 tons as of November 2024, with a market value of 218.919 million MAD (-5%), as compared with 11,578 tons (229.863 million MAD) in 2023.
The report also showed a 19% increase in mollusk landings, totaling 5,405 tons worth 352.089 million MAD (+14%), as compared to 4,540 tons last year valued at 310.082 million MAD. Crustacean landings rose by 52% to 185 tons (9.016 million MAD, +53%), as compared with 122 tons (5.876 million MAD) as of November 2023.
Nationally, the total marketed volume of coastal and traditional fishing products was 1,233,568 tons as of November 2024, marking a 1% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
The ONP reported that the market value of these landings amounted to approximately 10 billion MAD, reflecting a 6% growth from the previous year.
