Agnes Keleti, a Holocaust survivor who became a gymnastics icon and the oldest living Olympic medal winner, died Thursday morning in Budapest at age 103, AP reported.
The Hungarian state news agency confirmed her death after a battle with pneumonia that left her hospitalized on December 25.
Born Agnes Klein in 1921 in Budapest, she survived the horrors of World War II to become one of the most celebrated Jewish athletes in Olympic history. She won ten Olympic medals, including five golds, competing for Hungary in the 1952 Helsinki Games and the 1956 Melbourne Games.
The war delayed her gymnastics career, and an ankle injury kept her from competing in the 1948 London Olympics. She finally debuted at age 31 in Helsinki, winning a gold medal in floor exercise along with a silver and two bronze medals.
At 35, she made history in Melbourne by becoming the oldest gymnast to win gold, claiming four gold medals and two silvers in a single Games.
