The UN Security Council welcomed Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia on Thursday as the five newly elected non-permanent members for the 2025–2026 term, marking their official start with a flag installation ceremony at the UN Headquarters.
Denmark’s Ambassador Christina Markus underscored the urgent need to address global conflicts, climate disasters, and humanitarian crises, and said emphasizing the importance of collective action is important to tackle these challenges. Greece’s Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris expressed said his country’s intention intends to serve as a stabilizing bridge between regions and uphold peaceful dispute resolution.
Pakistan’s Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad advocated and called for “cooperative multilateralism,” diplomacy, and dialogue to address longstanding and emerging global conflicts. Panama’s Ambassador Eloy Alfaro de Alba marked the Security Council’s historical significance to Panama, recalling noting its 1973 session held in Panama City.
Somalia’s Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman acknowledged the trust placed in his nation and highlighted Somalia’s role within the African Union, Arab League, and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
