Russia’s Ambassador to Morocco, Vladimir Baibakov, praised Morocco’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict during an interview with Russian news agency TASS on Monday.
Baibakov expressed Moscow’s appreciation for Morocco’s refusal to engage in anti-Russian activities, describing Rabat as a friendly and strategic partner. He highlighted the unique relationship between the two countries, strengthened by agreements signed in 2016 between Russian President Vladimir Putin and King Mohammed VI.
“These agreements have proven their resilience against various global challenges, including geopolitical shifts and economic crises,” Baibakov stated. He said that political dialogue between Morocco and Russia remains active.
On the economic front, Baibakov highlighted significant trade growth, with Russian agricultural exports to Morocco rising from 209,000 tons in 2023 to 766,000 tons in 2024. Russia now ranks as Morocco’s second-largest grain and vegetable supplier.
He added that trade delegations from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and other regions have further strengthened economic ties.
Despite challenges posed by Western sanctions, Baibakov said he is optimistic about resolving banking issues through cooperation that serves the interests of both countries.
Morocco’s commitment to neutrality in the conflict aligns with its broader foreign policy principles. In May 2023, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita highlighted the country’s dedication to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states while promoting peaceful resolutions to disputes.
