Officials at the Aïn Sebaa 1 prison in Casablanca denied allegations of torturing their detainees to death, according to a statement from the prison administration on Monday.
The accusations, made by a former inmate in a series of YouTube videos, specifically targeted the prison’s head of security and discipline.
Prison authorities called the claims “baseless” adding that such accusations damage the reputation of both the institution and its staff. They explained that the accused official carries out his duties strictly within the framework of Moroccan penitentiary law, under the oversight of the prison’s director.
The administration described the ex-inmate as a repeat offender with a history of aggressive behavior toward staff and other detainees. During his most recent incarceration, the individual allegedly committed several violent acts within the prison.
Authorities also pointed out the former inmate’s criminal record, which includes convictions for fraud, theft, drug possession and consumption, and carrying a weapon in circumstances that endangered public safety.
Given the severity of the accusations, officials have filed a legal complaint against the ex-inmate. Judicial authorities will now address the matter.
