Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reaffirmed the kingdom’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during a phone call with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on its official Facebook page on Monday.
Bourita highlighted Morocco’s support for the Syrian people and the need to strengthen diplomatic ties to advance mutual interests, shared values, and bilateral cooperation.
He also underscored the necessity of strengthening diplomatic relations to serve mutual interests.
After the fall of former President Bashar Al-Assad’s regime several weeks ago, Bourita had stated on a call that Morocco is “closely monitoring recent developments” in Syria and expressed hope to the new leader that the changes would lead to lasting stability, fulfill the Syrian people’s aspirations, and pave the way for a better future.
Morocco has taken a cautious position with respect to Syria since the outbreak of its civil war in 2011. In 2012, Morocco closed its embassy in Damascus, urging Syria to reciprocate by closing its diplomatic mission in Rabat.
Despite the severance of formal ties, Morocco has consistently maintained its support for Syria’s sovereignty and opposed foreign interference in its internal affairs.
The latest phone call pinpoints a potential new chapter in Moroccan-Syrian relations as both nations navigate a rapidly shifting regional landscape in the Middle East and North Africa.
