The world’s population grew by over 71 million people in 2024 and will reach 8.09 billion as of New Year’s Day, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. The increase reflects a 0.9% growth rate, resulting in an annual increase slightly down from the 75 million increase in 2023, according to AP.
Projections for January 2025 indicate that 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths will happen every second worldwide.
In the United States, the population will have increased by 2.6 million in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million as of New Year’s Day. The country is expected to experience one birth every 9 seconds and one death every 9.4 seconds in January 2025. International migration will add one person every 23.2 seconds, resulting in a net population increase of one person every 21.2 seconds.
Since the beginning of 2020, the U.S. population has grown by almost 9.7 million people, a 2.9% increase. By contrast, the US population grew 7.4% during the previous decade, then the slowest growth since the 1930s.
