British newspaper The Guardian released a memorial article on Monday for victims of “femicide” in the United Kingdom, recording 80 cases of women having been killed by men in 2024, in a vital effort to highlight the issue of persistent violence against women.
The memorial builds upon years of work by advocacy campaigns such as Counting Dead Women, the Femicide Census, and Killing Women to ensure that victims’ lives and stories are not forgotten, according to the paper.
On average, a woman is killed by a man every three days in the UK, a statistic that starkly underscores the systemic nature of femicide. Yet, many of these tragedies go “unnoticed” by the broader public. By reporting on each case, The Guardian said it hopes to challenge this silence and foster greater awareness.
So far in 2024, 80 women have lost their lives under these circumstances, with men being charged in connection with each death. While there is no direct link between these incidents, the underlying patterns of gender-based violence highlight deep societal issues.
Through the series, The Guardian said it intendeds not only to honor the victims but also to promote dialogue on the broader cultural and systemic factors contributing to such violence.
