South Korean investigators on Monday requested that an arrest warrant be issued for suspended President Yoon Suk-Yeol for his failure to cooperate with their investigation into his six-hour declaration of martial law earlier this month.
The joint investigative headquarters announced the move, citing possible charges of insurrection and abuse of power by Yoon.
According to sources, the decision was prompted by Yoon’s failure to comply with three summonses issued by police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, which had sought his appearance for questioning.
It remains unclear whether the court will approve the warrant or if authorities can compel Yoon to cooperate with the investigation. His lawyer has argued that the Corruption Investigation Office lacks such authority.
The case has drawn widespread attention, potentially setting a significant precedent for how South Korea addresses allegations of executive overreach and misconduct at the highest levels of government.
