Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 75, underwent successful prostate removal surgery on Sunday, a procedure typically used to treat prostate cancer or prostatic hyperplasia, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
Netanyahu has faced several health issues in recent years and has worked to maintain a public image as a healthy, hard-working leader. He previously claimed to work 18-hour days during his corruption trial this month, according to AP.
However, Netanyahu’s demanding workload appears to have impacted his health. The 75-year-old is one of several aging world leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, 82; President-elect Donald Trump, 78; Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79; and Pope Francis, 88, who have faced scrutiny over their age and ability to lead.
While Netanyahu’s condition is common among older men, there have been some complications from the treatment. On Sunday, his attorney requested a delay in the three days of testimony scheduled for this week in his ongoing trial. Attorney Amit Hadad said Netanyahu would be fully sedated for the surgery and remain in the hospital for “a number of days.”
