Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has recently secured two contracts amounting to EUR 17 million for the adaptation of the Madrid-Zaragoza railway line to future rail highway services as part of the strategic Algeciras-Zaragoza route, according to local media.
These investments should strengthen Spain’s railway infrastructure, promote freight transport, and accelerate the transition to a decarbonized economy.
The creation of a rail highway along this strategic route will provide a direct link between Morocco and Europe, facilitating the transport of goods between Moroccan ports and major European economic zones.
Backed by a total investment of EUR 468 million, the project is designed to optimize trans-Mediterranean trade, particularly between the port of Algeciras, one of Spain’s largest, and Morocco.
The works include extending bypass tracks to 750 meters at several key stations along the Madrid-Zaragoza section, allowing for better rail traffic management.
The new line will enhance exchange efficiency between Europe and Morocco, generating new economic opportunities for both sides of the Mediterranean.
The project also aligns with the global objective of transport decarbonization, a crucial issue for Morocco, which is actively committed to energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also represents a major advancement in logistics between the two continents, reinforcing Morocco’s strategic role in international trade and fostering the integration of Euro-African economies.
