Puerto Rican boxer Paul Bamba has died at the age of 35, just a week after winning the World Boxing Association’s 90.71 kg title, his manager, Schaefer Smith, confirmed in a statement with Bamba’s family on Saturday.
Bamba secured the championship on December 21 with a technical knockout victory over Mexico’s Rogelio Medina Luna.
The boxer’s family did not reveal the cause of his death, requesting privacy in the statement. “We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief,” the statement added.
Bamba, who began his professional career in 2021, competed in 22 matches, achieving 19 victories and three losses.
His death marks a significant loss for the boxing community, cutting short the career of a promising athlete.
