The death toll from Sunday’s bridge collapse in northern Brazil has risen to 10, with seven people still missing, authorities confirmed Friday.
The central section of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge collapsed for unknown reasons. The 500-meter bridge connected Estreito, Maranhão, and Aguiarnópolis, crossing the Tocantins River as part of the BR-226 and BR-010 highways.
The Brazilian Navy reported on Thursday that rescue teams recovered two additional bodies, one from the Tocantins River and another six kilometers from the collapse site.
“The confirmed toll now stands at 10 dead and seven missing,” the Navy said.
Rescue operations continue with over 70 personnel and a specialized submarine capable of exploring depths of up to 30 meters.
