Morocco is increasingly becoming a preferred destination for Spanish tourists looking for an exciting place to ring in the new year on New Year’s Eve. According to recent data from GuruWalk, Spanish bookings to the kingdom between 2021 and 2024 have surged significantly.
Over the past three years, Morocco’s share of Spanish holiday bookings has risen to 3%, a notable leap from what was only a marginal percentage in 2021. At the same time, domestic travel within Spain has sharply declined, dropping from 60% of all bookings in 2021 to just 22% in 2024.
Although Europe is still the dominant choice for Spanish travelers, accounting for 92% of bookings in 2024 (down from 97% in 2021), Morocco has been carving out a special niche.
Cities such as Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes have become sought-after destinations for New Year’s celebrations, offering an enticing blend of traditional music, dance, and festive atmospheres that stand out from their European counterparts.
Spanish travelers’ increasing interest also reflects Morocco’s broader success in tourism. In November 2024, the country welcomed nearly 16 million visitors, a significant 20% increase over the same month the previous year.
As Morocco prepares to co-host the FIFA World Cup in 2030, it is working on attracting even greater numbers of tourists, with a target of 26 million arrivals annually by the end of the decade.
Morocco’s appeal goes beyond its New Year festivities. Spanish travelers are drawn to its diverse attractions, from the bustling markets of Marrakech and the historic medinas of Fes to the stunning landscapes of the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert.
For many, Morocco offers a unique mix of cultural richness and accessibility, making it an ideal destination for those seeking memorable and distinctive experiences.
Morocco’s close proximity to Spain and its affordability also make it an attractive choice for short international getaways. The country’s investments in tourism infrastructure—luxury hotels, guided tours, and improved transportation networks—have further bolstered its reputation as a world-class destination.
