Microsoft has been developing both internal and third-party artificial intelligence models to power its flagship 365 Copilot AI tool, aiming to reduce its reliance on OpenAI’s GPT-4 language model, Reuters reported.
The tech giant has been using the same language model behind ChatGPT to power Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Microsoft plans to diversify its AI language models to cut costs and improve speed for enterprise users, an anonymous source told Reuters.
When Microsoft launched 365 Copilot in March 2023, a key selling point was its use of OpenAI’s “tried and tested” GPT-4 model.
A Microsoft spokesperson said OpenAI will remain a partner for AI “frontier models,” referring to the most advanced AI models available.
“We incorporate various models from OpenAI and Microsoft depending on the product and experience,” Microsoft said in a statement.
