Egyptian doctor Abdel Basset Imam thanked Morocco’s King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan authorities for their decision not to extradite him to Egypt, despite Cairo’s request.
In an interview with Arabi21, Imam said, “The Moroccan judiciary had delivered justice in his case by refusing to hand him over to the Egyptian authorities.”
He noted the unique conditions of Moroccan prisons, highlighting facilities and services not commonly found elsewhere. He commended the Moroccan authorities for their fair handling of his case.
The Court of Cassation in Rabat recently ruled in favor of releasing Imam, a political dissident with dual Turkish and Egyptian nationality.
Imam was detained on November 3 at Casablanca Airport after traveling from Turkey to Morocco using a Turkish passport. He had been sentenced to life imprisonment in Egypt for opposing President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s regime.
