Coastal and artisanal fishing landings at ports along the Mediterranean reached 13,461 tons as of November, a decrease of 17% compared to the same period last year, according to Morocco’s National Fisheries Office (ONP).
The landings value increased by 9%, exceeding MAD 608.8 million during the first 11 months of 2024, compared to MAD 559.86 million year on year, ONP said in its latest report on coastal and artisanal fishing statistics in Morocco.
By species, the quantities of pelagic fish landed at these ports, from Tangier to Saidia, fell by 31% as of November, totaling 5,083 tons. The value dropped 13% to more than MAD 125.1 million, down from MAD 143.7 million for 7,384 tons compared to the same period last year.
Whitefish landings reached 2,288 tons, marking a 14% decline, with a value of over MAD 94.3 million, down 4% from approximately MAD 98.2 million for 2,652 tons year-on-year.
Cephalopod landings, however, rose by 22% to 4,730 tons, generating revenues of more than MAD 301.4 million, a 28% increase. Crustacean landings grew by 12% to 1,293 tons, with revenues reaching MAD 87.8 million, up 16%.
Shellfish landings saw a sharp 99% decline to just 9 tons, generating MAD 63,000 in revenue, compared to over MAD 7.30 million for 1,041 tons a year earlier. Meanwhile, algae landings increased to 59 tons, up from one ton.
Nationally, the landings of marketed coastal and artisanal fishing products reached 1,233,568 tons by the end of November 2024, a slight decrease of 1% compared to the same period last year. In terms of value, these landings recorded a 6% increase, nearing MAD 10 billion.
