The Socialist International Conference, hosted by Morocco, focused on the urgent issues of climate change and natural disasters, which have increasingly affected countries worldwide.
Participants from various political parties reaffirmed the growing severity of these challenges, particularly the devastating impact on Africa, where natural disasters have caused significant human and material losses.
According to the United Nations, climate scientists have confirmed that human activities, such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels, are directly responsible for all global warming over the past 200 years. These actions release greenhouse gases, accelerating global warming at an unprecedented rate.
Speakers at the conference highlighted that climate change drives many of today’s disasters, with extreme natural events occurring more frequently. Since 2012, hundreds of these disasters have been recorded globally.
The conference called for urgent action to address climate change, mitigate its effects, and provide support to poor and developing countries facing these challenges.
Participants also urged wealthy nations to invest in vulnerable countries and prioritize their needs. They agreed that tackling climate change and its impacts must be a global priority to alleviate the suffering of affected populations.
Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), and Driss Lachgar, Morocco’s Secretary-General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), co-chaired the two-day meeting, which was held under the theme “Progressive Solutions for a Changing World.”
