OpenAI has rolled out a new service allowing users to interact with its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, via WhatsApp through text messages only. The service, developed using OpenAI’s Realtime API, integrates ChatGPT with WhatsApp through the GPT-40 model via the WhatsApp API, international media reported.
While the service does not currently support images or files, it offers a simplified version of ChatGPT that’s easily accessible for users worldwide.
In addition, OpenAI has launched a phone-based ChatGPT service in the United States and Canada, making AI accessible without the need for an internet connection. By calling a dedicated phone number (1-800-242-8478), users can interact with ChatGPT, providing a way to access the technology even in low-connection areas.
However, for more advanced features like the search engine, and customization, users must continue to use the traditional ChatGPT app or website, where they need to log into their accounts.
The integration of ChatGPT into WhatsApp comes at a time when OpenAI faces increasing competition. Google has already integrated its Gemini chatbot into Android’s default messaging app, and Meta’s AI assistant, Meta AI, powered by Llama models, is incorporated into WhatsApp and other services, boasting 600 million active users monthly.
OpenAI’s move into WhatsApp could help it grow its user base in regions where WhatsApp has a dominant market share. Before this official integration, third-party services had already used OpenAI’s APIs to bring ChatGPT to WhatsApp.
