Spain’s Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Pedro Sánchez, is expected to preside over the International Socialist Council on Saturday in Rabat.
Driss Lachgar, Morocco’s Secretary-General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), will be co-chairing the meeting with Sánchez at the International Socialist gatherings, according to the Spanish news agency EFE, citing sources close to the event in Rabat.
Sources claim Sánchez will deliver a speech during the event. However, details regarding the date or program were not disclosed.
Preparatory sessions for the International Socialist Council began on Tuesday, December 17, at USFP headquarters in Rabat. Around 200 participants are engaging in discussions on topics such as peace, security, and democracy in Africa, recent floods on the African continent, the conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Among the key issues to be addressed during the event is women empowerment in the North Africa and Middle East (MENA) region.
The International Socialist Council lasts three days, from December 20 to 22.
Founded in 1951, the International Socialist is a global alliance of political groups from socialist, labor, or social democratic movements, with unions sharing similar ideologies. Since 2006, the organization has comprised nearly 132 political parties worldwide.
