The Rabat Court of First Instance convicted and sentenced a Palestinian national on Monday to one year in prison for making death threats against Palestine’s Ambassador to Morocco, Jamal Choubki, and his children, according to media reports. The court also fined him MAD 500.
The individual is now detained at Al Arjat Prison in Sale for charges of “threatening to commit a crime,” “insulting public officials,” and “irregular residency.”
The defendant had repeatedly visited the Palestinian embassy in Rabat, requesting the renewal of his residence permit and urging the Palestinian ambassador himself to intervene urgently to resolve his issue.
Last week, he reportedly returned to the embassy in a fit of anger, making verbal death threats against the ambassador and his children. His actions caused panic among embassy staff, who immediately alerted the police.
Evidence showed that the accused had been residing in Sale for several years. During the criminal court hearing, Ambassador Choubki declined to file a civil claim against the defendant, in light of the latter’s preventive detention and appearance before the court.
