Morocco has declined Egypt’s request to extradite Abdel Basset Imam, an Egyptian opposition figure who also holds Turkish citizenship, following a ruling by the Court of Cassation, Barlamane.com reports.
Imam was arrested on November 3 at Casablanca Airport after Egypt sought his extradition. He had been sentenced to life imprisonment in Egypt for his opposition to President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s regime.
The Court of Cassation’s decision to deny the request has been welcomed by Imam’s supporters, who commended Morocco’s judicial process.
Moroccan authorities released Imam on Tuesday following the court’s ruling.
