The Chilean Senate has expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for its southern provinces, Chilean Senator Francisco Chahuán said Tuesday in Rabat, according to the Morocco Press Agency (MAP).
Speaking at the opening of the “Congress of the Future,” hosted by Morocco’s Parliament in collaboration with the “Foundation of Meetings of the Future,” the Chilean Chamber of Deputies, and the Chilean Senate, Chahuán announced that the Senate had submitted a draft resolution backing Morocco’s autonomy proposal.
Chahuán, a member of the Commission on Future Challenges, said the autonomy model has proven effective in promoting development and addressing local concerns. During a recent visit to Laâyoune, he observed significant regional growth and improvements in residents’ quality of life.
Chahuán described Morocco as a strategic gateway for Chile to Africa. He emphasized shared challenges, including climate change, social inequalities, and migration, which both countries aim to tackle.
He noted that Morocco, Chile, and other nations in the Global South could present innovative solutions to global forums, calling for their contributions to be seriously considered.
The “Congress of the Future” provides a platform for dialogue among lawmakers, scientists, researchers, and other key figures on major global challenges. The event addresses topics such as climate change, international migration, global peace and security, food security, North-South cooperation, public health, energy transition, artificial intelligence, and gender equality.
Discussions also highlight Africa’s role as a continent of the future.
