Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita urged Libyan lawmakers to embrace the “Spirit of Skhirat ” agreement during a key meeting to resolve Libya’s political crisis that took place on Wednesday in Bouznika, Morocco.
Speaking at a consultative gathering between Libya’s House of Representatives and High Council of State, Bourita highlighted the pivotal role of Libyan unity in overcoming the deadlock. Over 60 members from both councils convened for the two-day talks.
Bourita reminded participants of the significance of the 2015 Skhirat Agreement, which provided Libya with recognized institutions and a measure of stability. He called on Libyans to take ownership of their country’s future without external interference.
The meeting comes amid regional turmoil and international involvement in Libyan affairs. Bourita noted the challenges Libya faces, including the need for a unified government to prepare credible elections and address pressing economic and social demands.
Morocco reaffirmed its neutral stance, offering a safe space for Libyans to discuss solutions away from outside pressures. This approach reflects the country’s unwavering commitment to Libya’s stability under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
The stakes are high as Libya’s political actors strive to bridge divides and set the stage for lasting peace. The “Spirit of Skhirat” remains a guiding beacon in this critical phase, upon its foundation; the Skhirat political agreement seeks to end hostilities, but also to past rivalries in order to unify the Libyan military forces.
