Cyclone Chido killed at least 34 people in Mozambique, according to authorities on Tuesday, days after the storm ripped through the French island of Mayotte, DW reported.
The National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management in Mozambique reported that Chido had injured over 300 additional people and destroyed nearly 23,600 homes and 170 fishing boats, affecting a total of over 175,000 people in Mozambique.
Chido hit land on Sunday in Cabo Delgado province, where it killed 28 people, before taking another six in Nampula province and Niassa, further inland.
Rescue workers are still attempting to recover from the severely damaged areas.
Authorities on Mayotte, a territory in the French Indian Ocean, enforced a curfew on Tuesday at the same hour, attempting to mitigate casualties.
Officials had already likened the effects of Chido on the island to a nuclear conflict, saying it is the worst natural disaster in 90 years.
Authorities and rescue services have warned that the final death toll in Mayotte might be in the hundreds or possibly thousands, despite the official death toll being 21 so far. According to the Interior Ministry, the curfew, which starts at 10 p.m. local time, was implemented to stop looting.
One of the many islands in the world that are governed from Paris and belong to France is Mayotte.
