Prince Andrew d’York said he cut ties with a businessman accused of being a Chinese spy after receiving government advice, the BBC reported.
His office clarified that their meetings, conducted “through official channels,” did not involve sensitive topics.
Identified as “H6,” the alleged spy has been banned from the UK following a ruling by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC). “H6” was described as a “close confidant” of the prince, with an unusual level of trust that allegedly allowed him to leverage his influence.
In March 2023, then-Home Secretary Suella Braverman barred H6 from the UK over suspected espionage for China, a decision upheld after H6’s appeal was dismissed.
H6 reportedly attended Andrew’s 2020 birthday party and was allegedly authorized to act in talks with Chinese investors on his behalf.
Evidence found on the electronic devices of the claimed espionage agent seized during a 2021 border stop, raised national security concerns for MI5.
A letter from Prince Andrew’s adviser, Dominic Hampshire, suggested H6 was at the “top” of a trusted inner circle and had facilitated discreet meetings at Windsor. Judges found these interactions could potentially aid Chinese political interference.
The court highlighted that H6 formed this relationship while Prince Andrew faced significant personal and financial pressures, making him susceptible to undue influence.
Security officials fear H6’s connections aimed to run an “elite capture” operation, a strategy often employed by China’s United Front Work Department (UFWD) to influence prominent figures.
The Home Office asserts that H6 engaged in covert activities on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Braverman has called for H6’s identity to be disclosed, citing a deterrent effect.
Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties in 2019 following scrutiny over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and later faced financial inquiries after a settlement in a sexual assault case.
He has also faced international scrutiny for his involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. His long-standing association with the convicted sex offender and the resulting allegations of sexual misconduct severely damaged his reputation, leading to his withdrawal from public royal duties and raising questions about his judgment and associations.
