Morocco is expected to surpass Egypt as Africa’s most visited country in 2024, with a record 16 million tourists visiting the kingdom between January and November, RFI reported.
This marks a 20% increase over the same period in 2023, and Moroccan authorities expect 17.5 million arrivals in 2025.
Marrakech, the “Red City,” remains a top destination for foreign tourists, supported by 34 direct low-cost flights from France. French nationals lead foreign visits, while British tourism has surged by 47% since 2023.
Agadir and Tangier also attract leisure travelers, while Casablanca primarily draws business tourists.
The tourism boom stems from Morocco’s strategic marketing and a favorable global climate, including a shift away from unstable regions like the Middle East. The sector, contributing 7% to the GDP, has already generated €9.2 billion in 2024, with further growth anticipated.
The growth is crucial as Morocco prepares to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, events that could draw hundreds of thousands of visitors.
