Niamey, the capital of the Republic of Niger, officially inaugurated the “King Mohammed VI Power Plant” on Thursday, as a gift from the Kingdom of Morocco, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
Nigerien Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, presided over the inauguration ceremony, held under the patronage of Brigadier General Abdourrahmane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) of Niger.
Located in the Gamkaley Industrial Zone of Niamey, the plant features state-of-the-art equipment and boasts a 20-megawatt energy production capacity, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
The project will enhance energy availability for Niger’s population while bolstering the country’s energy sovereignty amid a severe energy crisis.
The power plant stands as a testament to the strong ties between Niger and Morocco, built on principles of solidarity in advancing human development throughout Africa, the same source wrote.
A high-level Moroccan delegation attended the event, including Mohamed Methqal, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), Tarik Hamane, Director General of Morocco’s National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), and Allal El Achab, Morocco’s ambassador to Niger.
The power plant was constructed in collaboration between AMCI, ONEE, and Niger’s electricity company, NIGELEC.
