Morocco’s UN ambassador Omar Hilale reaffirmed on Friday the importance of unity among Southern nations to foster dialogue, inclusivity, and respect for sovereignty.
Speaking at “The Atlantic Dialogues” in Rabat, Hilale said the Global South can influence international decisions and drive UN reforms by uniting beyond ideological differences.
He highlighted challenges such as terrorism and armed conflicts, which are concentrated in the South, along with persistent inequalities between the North and South. He also stated that the South seeks equal participation in global governance and fair representation in multilateral institutions.
“Home to 80% of the world’s population and generating 50% of its GDP, the South is a major political and economic force, as long as fair rules are applied,” the ambassador asserted.
The 2024 Atlantic Dialogues, bringing together diverse voices and perspectives, positions the Atlantic Basin as a laboratory for innovative solutions to global challenges and reinforces its potential as a model for multilateralism and equitable growth.
The conference runs through Saturday.
