In a long-awaited decision, FIFA’s extraordinary Congress, which took place via videoconference on Wednesday, named Morocco, Spain, and Portugal as the official host nations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, said in a statement, “The CAF is delighted with this historic event and congratulates Morocco and its partners, Portugal and Spain.” He noted that Morocco will be the second African nation to host the World Cup. South Africa was the first in 2010.
Mostepe also applauded the “exemplary leadership” of the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, in securing Morocco’s bid to host the World Cup, the largest international sporting event.
The 2030 joint hosting of the World Cup transcends mere football and sport, according to Mostepe. He sees it as an opportunity for international dialogue to advocate for peace.
“The alliance between Morocco, Portugal, and Spain serves as a symbolic bridge between Africa and Europe through football and inspires all actors in the world of football to work together to make the world a better place,” he concluded.
