The 18th International Desert Film Festival held in Zagora in southeast Morocco kicked off on Monday, featuring Russia as the guest of honor. With a dynamic mix of performances, films, and cultural events, the festival’s opening night dazzled attendees with a stunning performance by Russian children’s folklore group “Kalinka” all the way from Moscow.
The group’s ten boys and girls delivered a choreographed dance performance blending Russian traditions with global influences, leaving the audience in awe and earning a standing ovation, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
Founded almost 60 years ago by Alexander Filippov in 1968, “Kalinka” is known for its extensive repertoire of over 150 dances, encompassing Russian folklore, modern styles, and narratives from around the world.
Russian musician and composer Marat Taturas added to the evening with an electronic music performance inspired by the mesmerizing landscapes of the Drâa Valley. Known for composing soundtracks for over 150 films, Taturas described the region’s beauty as a source of inspiration for his creative endeavors.
Sponsored by the Zagora Trans-Saharan Film Association, this year’s festival will run until December 13 and will promote cultural, social, and economic engagement in the region.
The program includes competitions in four categories: feature films, short films, documentaries, and screenplays. Notable entries include Russia’s “Mountain of Lovers” by Salavat Yuzeev and “Island of Noihon” by Elena Demidova.
The jury, chaired by Indian filmmaker Anup Singh, features international figures such as Russian filmmaker Milyausha Aituganova and composer Marat Fayzullin.
Along with the competitions, attendees can explore panel discussions on trans-Saharan cinema, workshops, out-of-competition film screenings, and other engaging activities.
Representing a range of nations, including Morocco, Russia, France, India, Egypt, and Tunisia, the festival celebrates global cinema against the stunning backdrop of the Moroccan desert.
At a recent meeting in Rabat, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Baibakov and festival organizers finalized the details, marking another chapter in this vibrant cultural exchange.
