Reconstruction and rehabilitation of schools and dormitories in Morocco’s Al Haouz province after the September 8, 2023, earthquake is progressing, according to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP), with a number of them having been completed and put back in operation, while reconstruction of partly or fully demolished facilities is advancing steadily.
During a visit to the region on Monday, Minister of Education, Preschool, and Sports, Mohamed Saad Berrada, assessed the progress of several projects in the town of Asni. The projects included the central school, Grand Atlas middle school, Asni high school, and a dormitory being rebuilt through a civil society partnership.
The visit coincided with a meeting of the Marrakech-Safi Regional Education and Training Academy (AREF) Council.
AREF Director Moulay Ahmed Karimi said the focus must be on maintaining high-quality work and adhering to set deadlines, in accordance with the Ministry directives.
Provincial education director Mohamed Zerrouki noted that 103 schools were completely destroyed in the earthquake, 126 were partially damaged, and over 100 others were affected to varying degrees. As repair efforts continue, the completion of additional facilities is expected to be done in phases.
