Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita said Morocco is “closely monitoring recent developments” in Syria following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad.
In a joint press briefing with former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, a candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Bourita reiterated Morocco’s clear stance in supporting “the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and the unity of the Syrian people,” converging media reports have quoted.
Bourita also said that Morocco hopes these “developments will lead to lasting stability in Syria, fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, and pave the way for a better future.”
The minister further noted that Morocco closed its embassy in Syria in 2012 and had called on Syria to reciprocate by closing its diplomatic mission in Morocco.
Bourita reaffirmed that Morocco, which is committed to Syria’s sovereignty over its territory and opposes any interference in its internal affairs, supports any political solution that ensures the rights of the Syrian people.
