Marrakech received the distinction of being named the Capital of Culture in the Islamic World for 2024 on Sunday, a significant honor which Barid Al-Maghrib, in partnership with Morocco’s Ministry of Culture, marked by issuing a commemorative postage stamp.
The stamp, named “Marrakech, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World for 2024,” features Marrakech’s majestic Menara Pavilion, flanked by its basin and its palm trees, with the Atlas Mountains in the background. The stamp’s ochre tones and elegant patterns capture the essence of Marrakech, a living symbol of Morocco’s history, and the city’s fascinating architecture.
The new release adds to Barid Al-Maghrib’s philatelic collection dedicated to Marrakech, which includes stamps celebrating iconic sites such as Jemaa El Fna Square (2017) as well as the founding of Marrakech in the 9th century (1960).
It also continues the tradition of honoring Moroccan cities that have been recognized by Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ICESCO, such as Fez in 2007.
The unveiling ceremony took place in Marrakech and was attended by prominent figures, including the Minister of Culture Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid; the President of the Marrakech Municipal Council, Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri; The Director-General of the ICESCO, Salim Mohamed AlMalik; and Amin Benjelloun Touimi, Director-General of Barid Al-Maghrib.
