Syrian rebels declared victory on Sunday after seizing control of Damascus, toppling President Bashar al-Assad, and ending five decades of Assad family rule. The development marks a major shift in Middle Eastern politics, Reuters reported.
The Islamist-led rebel coalition announced Assad’s ouster after gaining control of the Syrian capital with minimal resistance from regime forces. Celebrations followed as rebels stormed Iran’s embassy in Damascus, signifying defiance against Tehran, one of Assad’s key allies.
“We celebrate the end of injustice,” the coalition stated, highlighting the release of prisoners from Sednaya, a notorious government prison.
Thousands of Syrians filled the streets of Damascus, waving flags and chanting ‘freedom’ in celebration.
Earlier today, senior military officials confirmed that Assad had fled Damascus. However, his destination remains unknown. Rebel leaders said their priority is establishing a transitional government with full executive powers to rebuild the war-torn country.
Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali who maintained neutrality during much of the conflict, called for free elections to bring stability.
“The Syrian people have endured unimaginable suffering. Now is the time to honor their sacrifices with a government that reflects their will,” he said in a televised address.
