Mpox cases in Africa have surged past 62,000 since the beginning of 2024, with over 13,500 confirmed infections and 1,200 fatalities, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) this week.
The Africa CDC’s latest report shows a total of 62,171 Mpox cases, with 13,579 confirmed and 1,200 related deaths.
The Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a public health emergency in Africa to raise awareness and mobilize resources to address the outbreak.
Following the emergency declaration, health officials launched a six-month continental response plan, developed in partnership with the WHO, which allocated nearly USD 600 million to curb the spread of Mpox and strengthen healthcare systems in affected regions.
