Dakhla’s police, in coordination with border customs security, thwarted an international drug trafficking operation at the Guerguerat crossing south of the city on Thursday. Moroccan police seized a total of 136 kilograms and 66 grams of cocaine intended for distribution across Morocco, according to security sources.
The operation began with the monitoring of a freight truck arriving at the border crossing. The truck, which bore license plates from an unspecified sub-Saharan African country, was subjected to thorough checks upon its arrival. Authorities discovered the cocaine shipment carefully hidden within the truck’s cooling system and frame.
The local authorities arrested the truck driver and his companion, both foreign nationals, aged 33 and 38, from another African country. They have since been placed under judicial investigation, overseen by the public prosecutor.
The investigation will work to uncover the full scope of the trafficking operation, including identifying additional suspects and any international connections.
This successful operation is part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to combat international drug smuggling. Moroccan authorities continue to ramp up their vigilance against the illegal trade of hard drugs and other illicit substances being trafficked into the country from abroad.
