The Green Earth Program of Blue Horizon, owned by OHB Venture Capital in Germany, is advancing large-scale carbon sequestration operations using a patented microorganism technology now being demonstrated in Morocco, according to a company statement.
After beginning development in 2019 and conducting a field test in Burkina Faso, the project is now establishing three, one-hectare sites across Morocco, OHB announced.
In collaboration with Phycotek, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), and the Luxembourg Institute of Technology, the program focuses on CO2 capture, soil fertility improvement, and erosion risk reduction, backed by scientific analysis for certification.
Funded by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Economy and OHB Venture Capital to the tune of EUR 2.5 million, the program is expected to prove its efficiency by 2027 and expand globally to cover 1 million km² by 2050, potentially capturing 5–10 billion tons of CO2.
Managing Director Jochen Harms highlighted the transformative impact of the technology for sustainable climate solutions. The program “will allow [us] to demonstrate that our patented mix can sequestrate CO2 in large quantities [to] improve soil fertility and reduce erosion risk.”
