France’s President Emmanuel Macron called Morocco’s water resource management “water highways” project a “remarkable success” during the “One Water” summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday.
Macron highlighted Morocco’s innovative use of technology and strategic planning in addressing water challenges in both rural and urban areas, noting that the kingdom is setting an example for global water governance.
“I believe few countries have addressed this issue with as much vigor and innovation,” he said. France is honored to be a partner in Morocco’s unprecedented policies, he added.
Macron’s remarks underscored Morocco as a leader in innovative water solutions amidst growing international challenges.
Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, representing King Mohammed VI at the summit, detailed the country’s USD 14 billion national program designed to ensure sustainable access to drinking and irrigation water. He highlighted the successful completion of the first phase of Morocco’s water highway, which will connect the Sebou and Bouregreg basins to deliver an average of one million cubic meters of water daily.
The summit, along with COP28, brings together world leaders and experts annually to discuss global water scarcity.
