US Consul General to Casablanca, Marissa Scott, led a significant swearing-in ceremony for 53 new Peace Corps volunteers in Central Morocco, Beni Mellal, last Thursday, according to the US Embassy’s press release.
These volunteers have just completed an intensive 10-week pre-service training program, to learn the necessary skills for their two-year assignment across Morocco. Their work will focus on youth development, partnering with local communities to promote peace and friendship.
Consul General Scott spoke of the importance of the volunteers’ upcoming work. “Their hard work, cultural immersion, and commitment to promoting peace and friendship will contribute significantly to Morocco’s youth development,” she said.
The volunteers, representing diverse US.backgrounds, will work in regions throughout Morocco such as Marrakech-Safi, Fez-Meknes, and Souss-Massa. Their primary focus will be youth development, collaborating with local youth centers to implement after-school programs.
These programs will provide Moroccan youth with opportunities to develop their English language and life skills, as well as engage with their communities in meaningful ways.
Abdrahman Bouhoute, Training Manager at Peace Corps Morocco, opened the ceremony by congratulating the new volunteers. He praised their commitment and perseverance during the training program, which included learning Moroccan Darija, understanding local culture, and gaining essential youth development skills.
Morocco, one of the first countries to host Peace Corps volunteers in 1963, has continued to be a sought-after destination for those wishing to engage in cross-cultural exchange and community development. Since then, more than 5,000 US.citizens have served in Morocco, representing a broad range of ages and backgrounds.
Morocco remains one of the most popular destinations for Peace Corps volunteers, who continue to play a key role in fostering mutual understanding between the US. and Morocco.
