As Morocco’s blueberry season begins next week, early indicators suggest there will be an excellent harvest this year, and production levels are expected to reach approximately 80,000 tons, Juan Sainz from Frutta Group, told FreshPlaza. Peak availability is anticipated to be from March through June.
Morocco continues to strengthen its position as a leading global blueberry exporter. The country’s high-quality produce and efficient logistics have attracted growing interest from international buyers, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America, according to Sainz.
“Moroccan blueberries are increasingly recognized for their exceptional quality, attracting customers seeking premium products,” he said.
The nation’s focus on cultivating advanced blueberry varieties has distinguished it from competitors in the fast-expanding global market.
However, challenges remain as new players such as Zimbabwe enter the industry. Sainz noted that time will tell which regions will sustain a competitive edge.
Frutta Group, which supplies blueberries year-round to partners in Europe, North America, and beyond, anticipates a less challenging season compared to last year.
Previously, heightened demand from Europe, the Middle East, and Russia created stiff competition for Moroccan blueberries, complicating access for North American customers. This year, however, the outlook is more balanced, with optimism for smoother market dynamics.
In the 23/24 season, Morocco reached a milestone record in blueberry exports of 67,300 tons, a 25% increase over the previous season.
