Morocco’s AMO Tadamoun program now provides free healthcare to over 11.1 million Moroccans in precarious situations, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said during a meeting with the ministerial commission overseeing the implementation of reforms in Rabat on Tuesday.
AMO Tadamoun is a mandatory health insurance (AMO) program that is the cornerstone of the Moroccan government’s strategy to achieve universal health coverage for Moroccan citizens.
Beneficiaries of AMO Tadamoun are entitled to receive free medical care and hospital services in public health facilities. They also gain access to the same healthcare benefits offered under private-sector insurance plans, with the government covering approximately 30% of the total costs.
In addition to AMO Tadamoun, the government has advanced other social security programs, such as a retirement plan.
As of October 2024, 3.8 million self-employed workers and their dependents had joined the Mandatory Health Insurance (AMO) and retirement schemes, securing coverage for a previously underserved segment of the population.
A direct social assistance program launched in December 2023 has also reached 4 million families, including 5.4 million children and 1.2 million elderly citizens, improving their living standards and financial security, according to Akhannouch.
The creation of the National Agency for Social Support, in addition to the rapid enactment of 28 implementation decrees, has improved the social security safety net for millions of Moroccan citizens.
