The age-old art of Moroccan bookbinding took center stage at Qatar National Library on Tuesday with the launch of an exhibition entitled “From Material to Market: The Art of Book-Making in Morocco.”
Running until 26 April, the display celebrates Morocco’s long history of bookbinding and its enduring cultural heritage.
As part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Cultural Year, the showcase connects traditions and modernity by highlighting ancient Moroccan bookbinding techniques alongside contemporary works by five Qatari artists.
Inspired by Morocco’s vibrant heritage, the artists created unique pieces that reflect the cultural dialogue and deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
Qatar’s Minister of State and President of the Qatar National Library, Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari called the exhibition a “unique opportunity” for the public to explore the ancient traditions of Moroccan bookbinding.
“This exhibition celebrates a shared cultural heritage, offering the public a chance to connect with the artistry that flourished across the Islamic world,” he said.
He added that hosting the event reflects the library’s commitment to strengthening Qatari-Moroccan relations through cultural exchange.
The exhibition takes audiences beyond simple observation, offering a step-by-step journey through the bookmaking process. From selecting raw materials, such as leather and plant-based inks, to the meticulous artistry of professional calligraphers and bookbinders, visitors can immerse themselves in the meticulous craft that defines Morocco’s literary history.
