King Mohammed VI of Morocco sent a letter to Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino Quintero today thanking him for Panama’s decision to support Morocco’s territorial integrity. The King wrote that the move is both “wise” and “in accordance with international law.”
The letter was in response to Panama’s action last week when it officially cut off diplomatic ties with the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD), citing the need to “comply with international law.”
“I send my sincerest thanks for your country’s thoughtful decision on November 21, 2024, regarding Morocco’s foremost national cause,” King Mohammed VI stated.
King Mohammed VI also highlighted the decision’s positive impact on bilateral relations. “I am delighted to see a new chapter opening in the bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Panama,” he said.
The Central American country endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in June as the “only solution” to the regional dispute. With that decision, Panama joined a growing list of countries that are supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
In 2020, the US made its historic decision to support Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, reversing some 30 years of US policy. One year later, the Kingdom gained the support of Spain. Earlier this year, France also asserted its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, a decision that analysts widely considered as a “game changer” for Europe.
