The European Union (EU) will allocate MAD 2.09 billion for the reconstruction and improvement of the regions affected by the earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023.
Oliver Varhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, announced during his visit to Morocco on Monday, November 25.
The purpose of the mission is to “reaffirm the European commitment to Morocco and launch a reconstruction aid program following the earthquake,” according to an EU statement.
During his visit, the European Commissioner is scheduled to meet with Fouzi Lekjaa, Morocco’s Minister of Budget, to ink the MAD 2.09 billion agreement. These funds are part of a larger program totaling MAD 2.475 billion intended to support affected populations, restore essential public services, and revitalize the local economy.
The European Commissioner is also expected to meet with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Economy and Finance, and Mohamed Benchaâboun, Director General of the Mohammed VI Investment Fund.
