Chinese construction and engineering giant Gezhouba Group has secured a substantial civil engineering contract for Morocco’s high-speed rail project to connect Kenitra and Marrakech. The contract, valued at MAD 2.32 billion (around USD 225 million), is the ninth leg of the ambitious rail project known as the TGV.
Important for the train line’s route, Gezhouba will build viaducts across a number of rivers, including the Ikkem, Cherrat, Nfifikh, Dir, and Maleh, according to Zawya.
The 430-kilometer high-speed railway line, which will connect Marrakech in the south to Kenitra in the northwest via Casablanca, is a key part of Morocco’s plans to improve its national transportation network.
The National Railway Office (ONCF) has split the entire national project into 10 separate packages. Gezhouba’s contract is part of this broader development initiative to improve Morocco’s infrastructure and facilitate faster and more efficient travel across the country.
The new rail line will reduce travel time between Kenitra and Marrakech, offering a faster, more reliable mode of transportation. The project is expected to have a major positive impact on Morocco’s economy by improving connectivity and supporting regional development.
Gezhouba is the fifth Chinese company to be awarded a contract for Morocco’s extensive TGV project, following in the footsteps of firms including CRCC 20, China Railway No. 04 Engineering, Shandong Hi-Speed Engineering-Construction, and Covec.
China’s role in developing Africa’s infrastructure, particularly in high-speed rail networks, has been expanding under its Belt and Road Initiative.
