The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, said in a press statement following the draw for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Friday that he is proud of Morocco’s role in the development of football across Africa.
Motsepe welcomed Morocco’s sports infrastructure, highlighting that the Moroccan model should be followed by other countries on the African continent.
“I encourage African nations to inspire from the partnership and cooperation between various institutions in Morocco, including the government, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), and other stakeholders,” the CAF President stated.
Motsepe expressed confidence that the 2024 Women’s AFCON, for which the draw took place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Sale, would be “exciting, especially after African teams’ performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
He noted the significant improvement in the level and quality of women’s football, adding, “We will witness the best of African women’s football, and Africa will show the world the talent of its female players.”
FRMF Head Faouzi Lekjaa pointed out that this year’s AFCON allows the Moroccan team to showcase the significant progress made in women’s football in Morocco.
Following the draw the host nation, Morocco, was placed in Group A along with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, and Zambia. Group B consists of Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana, while Group C includes South Africa, Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.
The WAFCON 2024 will be held in Morocco from July 5-26, 2025.
