Morocco’s competition authority has fined US. pharmaceutical giant “Viatris Inc.” MAD 7.58 million (USD 760,000) for failing to notify regulators about its 2020 merger between Mylan and Pfizer’s Upjohn division, Reuters reported from confidential sources.
This penalty, equivalent to 2.5% of Viatris’ revenue in Morocco last year, has already been paid to the treasury, according to official sources.
Viatris has not appealed the decision and has not issued a public comment on the matter.
The Moroccan regulator is also investigating other mergers that may have bypassed mandatory notification, including a joint venture between Moroccan phosphate business OCP and global fertilizer “Fertinagro Biotech” and the acquisition of “Whirlpool’s”MENA operations by Turkish company “Arçelik.”
These cases highlight Morocco’s commitment to enforcing merger regulations to ensure fair competition in its markets.
